Bearing construction

What Is a Spherical Roller Bearing?

A typical spherical roller bearing has two rows of barrel-shaped rollers, a common spherical raceway in the outer ring and two raceways in the inner ring. Cages guide and separate the rollers; the detailed arrangement varies by design.

The spherical outer-ring raceway allows the inner ring and roller assembly to align within the bearing. This helps accommodate angular misalignment between the shaft and housing, subject to the manufacturer’s limits.

These bearings support substantial radial loads together with axial loads in both directions. The load combination, operating speed and mounting arrangement still need to be checked for the exact bearing.

Self-aligning does not mean unlimited movement. Misalignment limits vary with load, bearing size, seals and application. It also does not automatically provide the axial movement needed for shaft thermal expansion.

Start with the shaft arrangement

Cylindrical & Tapered Bore Options

The bearing bore and the shaft mounting method are separate purchasing details. Confirm both before selecting a replacement or a housed bearing assembly.

Bore / arrangementHow it is usedWhat to confirm in the RFQ
Cylindrical boreMounted on a suitable cylindrical shaft seat using the specified fit and locating arrangement.Bearing bore, shaft and housing fits, shoulders, clearance and axial location.
Tapered bore · 1:12Fits a matching tapered shaft seat or a compatible adapter or withdrawal sleeve. Often identified by K; confirm the specified taper.Full bearing reference, shaft diameter, sleeve reference and mounting method.
Tapered bore · 1:30Uses a shallower taper than 1:12. Often identified by K30; confirm the taper and matching seat or sleeve.Exact K30 design and matching seat or sleeve. Do not substitute a 1:12 sleeve.

Ordering a complete housed assembly? List the bearing, housing, sleeve, locating rings, seals and end cover separately where required. Include shaft diameter and quantities for each component. A bearing number alone does not define the complete assembly.

With sleeve mounting, the shaft diameter can differ from the bearing’s nominal tapered bore. Mounting reduces internal clearance; use the manufacturer’s clearance-reduction or drive-up procedure for the actual bearing and shaft arrangement.

From family to full reference

Common Spherical Roller Bearing Series

Series identify dimension families, not a guaranteed load rating or a complete specification. Check the selected model, cage, bore, clearance and any application-specific design.

SeriesPurchasing focusTypical selection context
222 SeriesA common general industrial family; confirm the exact envelope and bore type.Conveyors, industrial drives and general shaft-support replacements.
223 SeriesTypically a larger section than 222 at the same bore; verify available space.Heavier machinery and selected vibratory applications using the specified special design.
230 SeriesOften considered where radial space is limited; check width and shaft support requirements.Industrial gearboxes and larger shaft arrangements with a constrained bearing envelope.
231 SeriesA separate diameter/width family; keep the complete reference when sourcing a housing assembly.Industrial transmissions and larger mounted shaft supports.
232 SeriesCheck actual catalogue width carefully, including decimal values.Heavily loaded shaft supports in processing and material-handling machinery.
240 SeriesA wide bearing family; confirm whether the selected tapered-bore version requires a 1:30 taper.Larger industrial shafts and assemblies where bearing width and mounting method are critical.

These are general selection contexts, not application approvals. The dimension examples below are nominal identification references. Confirm the selected product’s specifications and availability with the inquiry.

Nominal boundary dimensions

Spherical Roller Bearing Sizes & Dimensions

The usual boundary dimensions are d × D × B: bearing bore, outside diameter and width. Dimensions help identify a candidate; they do not establish equivalent internal design or application suitability.

Dimensions shown are nominal reference values for model identification, not a KROX product specification or stock list. Basic model numbers omit bore, clearance and internal-design details. Confirm the exact bearing designation, internal design and technical specifications before ordering. For the 23220 reference shown, B = 60.3 mm; retain the decimal value. Load ratings, speeds, weights and tolerances depend on the selected product.

Small markings, important differences

Model Identification: K, K30, C3, W33 & Cage Codes

Send the complete marking, including its brand and all prefixes and suffixes. The meanings below are common identification conventions, not a universal suffix standard. Internal-design and lubrication codes must be checked against the selected product’s specification.

CodeCommon meaning / limitationWhat the buyer should check
KCommonly identifies a tapered bore with a 1:12 taper.Confirm the specified taper, matching shaft seat or sleeve, and actual shaft diameter.
K30Commonly identifies a tapered bore with a 1:30 taper.Confirm the specified taper. K and K30 indicate different mounting geometry in systems using these conventions.
C3Radial internal clearance greater than Normal before mounting. The clearance required by the application, fits and operating temperatures. C3 is not a quality grade.
W33Commonly identifies an outer-ring lubrication groove and three lubrication holes.Confirm groove and hole arrangement, lubrication paths and housing compatibility. W33 does not specify seals or clearance.
CCOften associated with pressed-steel cage designs; the cage arrangement and roller guidance vary by manufacturer. The manufacturer’s complete internal-design description and original cage requirement.
CAOften associated with a machined brass cage design; the complete internal construction is product-specific.Cage and ring design requirements; do not rank suitability by cage material alone.
EAn internal-design code used for optimized designs in some product ranges; it does not specify one universal cage construction.Confirm the exact internal design, cage and lubrication features. The E code alone does not establish equivalence.

CA, CC and E are not universal cross-brand specifications. Confirm cage material, roller guidance, internal design and lubrication features from the selected product documentation. Some designs include lubrication features without a separate W33 suffix; absence of the code alone does not establish whether these features are present.

Two separate engineering checks

Internal Clearance & Self-alignment

Clearance must suit the mounted bearing

Unmounted clearance is not the same as running clearance. Interference fits, tapered-bore mounting and temperature differences between the rings can change the available clearance.

Use the specified clearance class and mounting procedure. Do not select C3 as a default upgrade, or apply a generic tightening torque or tapered roller bearing preload procedure.

Misalignment limits depend on the arrangement

A self-aligning bearing still needs sound shaft and housing geometry. Seal contact, loads, abutments and rotating shaft deflection can restrict permissible angular movement.

The locating/non-locating arrangement must also allow the required thermal movement. Self-alignment alone does not establish a free axial sliding path.

Use the selected product’s mounting instructions to confirm clearance reduction and any drive-up method. Check the complete shaft-support arrangement for axial location and the thermal movement required in service.

Application-led sourcing

Typical Industrial Applications

Spherical roller bearings are considered for loaded shaft supports where alignment, stiffness and operating conditions must be reviewed together.

Mining & quarrying

Crushers and processing equipment; review impact loads, contamination and the exact bearing specification.

Conveyors & bulk handling

Loaded shaft supports where housing seals, lubrication and shaft alignment need coordinated selection.

Industrial gearboxes

Gear shafts with combined loads; confirm axial location, speed and the non-locating support arrangement.

Paper machinery

Roll supports where temperature, moisture, shaft deflection and thermal movement need attention.

Steel & heavy machinery

Larger bearing and housing assemblies requiring clear model identification and operating data.

Fans & blowers

Review speed, loading, lubrication and operating clearance for the actual shaft arrangement.

Vibrating screens require an application-specific check. A general-purpose spherical roller bearing should not automatically replace a designated vibratory bearing. Include the original model, vibration conditions and equipment information.

Technical & purchasing questions

Spherical Roller Bearing FAQ

What is a spherical roller bearing?

It is a self-aligning rolling bearing, typically with two rows of barrel-shaped rollers and a common spherical outer-ring raceway. It supports radial loads together with axial loads in both directions, within the limits of its specific design.

Can spherical roller bearings carry axial loads?

Yes, they can support axial loads in both directions as well as radial loads. The permissible axial loading depends on the bearing design and operating conditions; the family name alone does not establish capacity.

How much misalignment can they accommodate?

There is no universal angle for every spherical roller bearing. Limits depend on series, load, seal design and whether the misalignment direction changes relative to the outer ring. Check the exact manufacturer’s catalogue and housing arrangement.

What is the difference between cylindrical and tapered bores?

A cylindrical bore fits a cylindrical shaft seat. A tapered bore fits a compatible tapered seat or an appropriate adapter or withdrawal sleeve. Confirm taper, shaft diameter, mounting method and sleeve reference before ordering.

What do K and K30 mean?

K commonly identifies a 1:12 tapered bore, while K30 commonly identifies a 1:30 tapered bore in spherical roller bearing designations. These tapers are different. Confirm the selected product’s designation system, taper and matching sleeve or seat before ordering.

Does C3 mean better quality or a higher speed rating?

No. C3 identifies radial internal clearance greater than Normal before mounting. It is neither a quality grade nor a standalone speed rating. Select the clearance required by the fits, temperatures, loading and mounting method.

What does W33 mean, and is it required on every bearing?

W33 commonly identifies an outer-ring lubrication groove and three lubrication holes. Some designs include lubrication features without a separate W33 suffix. Confirm the groove, hole arrangement and lubrication path for the selected product; the code is not a universal cross-brand specification.

What is the difference between CA, CC and E designs?

These are internal-design codes whose definitions vary by manufacturer and product range. CA is often associated with machined brass cage designs and CC with pressed-steel cage designs; E does not define one universal cage type. Confirm the full design, cage and lubrication specification rather than treating these codes as interchangeable.

Can a bearing be quoted together with its housing and sleeve?

Send separate references and quantities for the bearing, housing, sleeve, locating rings, seals and end cover where required. Include the shaft diameter and drawing. Compatibility, scope of supply and availability are confirmed for the requested assembly.

Can standard spherical roller bearings replace vibrating-screen bearings?

Do not assume this. Vibratory service can require a specific internal design, cage, tolerances and clearance. Provide the original bearing reference, equipment details and operating conditions so the application requirement can be reviewed.

Can I replace one brand with another?

A complete bearing may be considered after checking dimensions, internal design, clearance, tolerances, cage, lubrication features and application requirements. Send the original full marking and any drawing; commercial availability and technical suitability need separate confirmation.

What information does KROX need for a quotation?

Provide the full bearing model, brand preference, quantity, bore type, clearance and cage requirement if specified, dimensions or drawings, application details, destination country and required delivery date. State whether housings or sleeves are included.

Confirm the Specification Before Ordering

KROX can review the model, dimensions, quantities and application information for quotation. Use the selected product’s drawing and technical specification for final acceptance.
