Construction & load direction

Tapered Roller Bearing Overview

A tapered roller bearing uses tapered rollers running between conical inner and outer raceways. Its main components are the inner ring, outer ring, rollers and cage, which spaces and retains the rollers.

A single row tapered roller bearing carries radial load together with axial load in one direction. Radial loading also produces an internal axial force, so an opposing bearing or another suitable arrangement is normally needed to balance that force and locate the shaft.

Two opposed bearings can support axial loads in both directions. The arrangement, bearing spacing and specified endplay or preload affect shaft guidance and stiffness. Load, speed, lubrication and alignment must be considered together.

Cup and cone: the cup is the outer ring. On this page, cone assembly means the inner ring together with its rollers and cage. The separable design allows the cup and cone assembly to be mounted independently.

For replacement inquiries, identify whether the requirement is a complete cup-and-cone bearing or a separate component, and include all available ring markings.

Configurations & sizing systems

Types of Tapered Roller Bearings

Row count describes the bearing arrangement; metric or inch describes the sizing system. These categories overlap: a single row bearing may be metric or inch.

Single Row Tapered Roller Bearings

One roller row with a separable cup and cone assembly. Often installed as an opposed pair for shaft support; the mounting must provide the specified bearing setting.

Double Row Tapered Roller Bearings

Two opposed roller rows can carry radial load and axial loads in both directions. Designs may use a double cup or double cone. Confirm the assembly reference, spacers and specified clearance as a set.

Metric Tapered Roller Bearings

Nominal boundary dimensions are based on millimetres. Familiar designations include the 302, 303, 320, 322 and 323 families; prefixes and suffixes still need to be checked.

Inch Tapered Roller Bearings

Inch-based dimension systems commonly identify the cone and cup separately. Supply both references and every suffix when requesting a complete bearing or a replacement component.

Cup and Cone Assemblies

Specify whether you need a complete cup-and-cone bearing, a cone assembly only or a cup only. A similar bore or appearance does not establish component compatibility.

Common Bearing Series

The series helps narrow the dimension family. Compare the actual envelope at the required bore before considering load ratings or replacement suitability.

Common metric families and typical selection contexts
SeriesDimension familyMain characteristicTypical uses to evaluate
302 SeriesLightA common starting point for general metric bearing envelopes.Industrial gearboxes, wheel assemblies and general transmission equipment.
303 SeriesMediumGenerally a larger radial envelope than 302 at the same bore.Gearbox shafts and machinery with room for a larger bearing section.
320 SeriesVery light, wideA relatively compact radial section; retain design suffixes such as X where specified.Compact transmissions, agricultural machinery and wheel-support arrangements.
322 SeriesLight, wideA wider envelope than the corresponding 302 family in common sizes.Industrial transmissions and construction or agricultural equipment.
323 SeriesMedium, wideA wider envelope than the corresponding 303 family in common sizes.Heavier gearbox and machinery duty where the calculated loads justify the design.

Application examples are general selection contexts, not model approvals or KROX customer claims. “Light” and “medium” describe dimension families, not verified load capacities.

Know which width you are measuring

Dimensions & Model Identification

Tapered roller bearing dimensions are usually stated as d × D × T for the complete bearing. The separate ring widths B and C are also important when checking a drawing or replacement.

d
Bore diameter
Inner ring bore
D
Outside diameter
Outer ring diameter
T
Total bearing width
Assembled cup and cone
B
Inner ring width
Cone ring width
C
Outer ring width
Cup width

T, B and C are different measurements. T is not the sum of B and C. For example, 30206 has T = 17.25 mm, B = 16 mm and C = 14 mm in the nominal dimension example below.

If the table is wider than your screen, swipe to view every dimension. The model column stays visible.

Dimensions shown are nominal reference values for model identification, not a KROX product specification or stock list. Confirm the exact bearing designation, cup/cone combination, internal design and technical specifications before ordering. Load ratings, speeds, weights and tolerances depend on the selected product.

Reading a metric model

In many conventional metric designations, the final two digits are a bore code. For example, “06” in 30206 corresponds to 30 mm. This rule is not universal: special bores, newer ISO designations and inch references require their own catalogue checks.

Keep the complete marking

Send the brand, basic reference and every prefix or suffix. The 32006X example above retains its X suffix; do not omit it or assume an unsuffixed reference is equivalent. Photos of both ring markings, the box label and a dimensional drawing can resolve incomplete or worn references.

Replacement checks

Metric vs Inch Tapered Roller Bearings

Converting a dimension from inches to millimetres does not turn an inch bearing into a metric bearing. The original dimension system, component references and drawing govern the replacement.

CheckMetric seriesInch series
Dimension basisNominal dimensions based on millimetres.Nominal dimensions based on inches; catalogues may also show metric conversions.
Model identificationOften a complete bearing reference such as 30206; other numbering systems also exist.Commonly a separate cone reference and cup reference, with applicable prefixes and suffixes.
Component matchingVerify design, contact geometry and manufacturer interchange conditions before mixing components.Confirm the exact approved cone/cup combination; one cone can have more than one possible cup match.
Replacement decisionCheck d, D, T, B, C, shoulders, tolerances and application requirements.Check the same details using the original inch drawing or exact catalogue pair, without rounding converted values.

For a complete bearing RFQ, include both cup and cone references when separately marked. Equal bore and outside diameter alone do not prove a correct fit, contact angle, bearing setting or load capacity.

Where combined loads matter

Typical Applications

Industrial tapered roller bearings are considered where the shaft support must manage combined loading. The equipment drawing and operating conditions determine the final bearing.

Industrial gearboxes

Gear shafts carrying radial force and axial thrust; confirm gear type, thrust direction and bearing setting.

Agricultural machinery

Wheel and transmission supports where contamination control, shock loading and lubrication need attention.

Construction equipment

Drive and axle components where varying loads and impact conditions affect bearing selection.

Vehicle wheel assemblies

Specified wheel-end designs using tapered roller bearings. Match the vehicle or axle reference and OEM adjustment procedure.

Industrial transmission systems

Shaft arrangements requiring defined axial location as well as radial support.

Heavy-duty machinery

Loaded shaft supports where bearing life, stiffness and housing design need to be evaluated together.

Prepare the technical requirement

Bearing Selection Guide

Begin with the existing specification for a replacement. For a new design, provide the shaft arrangement and operating data so the bearing requirements can be reviewed.

Selection itemWhat to provide or checkWhy it matters
Model & dimensionsComplete part number, cup/cone references, d, D, T, B, C and a drawing when available.Similar-looking bearings can have different widths, contact geometry or mounting details.
Loads & speedRadial and axial loads, shock or duty cycle, operating speed and required service life.Capacity and speed suitability must be checked for the exact bearing design and lubrication.
Axial load directionOne-way or reversing thrust and how the opposing axial reaction is supported. One single row bearing supports external axial load in one direction.
Mounting arrangementBack-to-back, face-to-face or another specified arrangement; bearing spacing and shaft location.Arrangement changes shaft guidance, stiffness and adjustment requirements.
Lubrication & temperatureOil or grease, operating temperature, lubricant supply, seals and contamination exposure.Lubricant condition and thermal changes affect operating performance and bearing setting.
Fits, tolerances & preloadShaft/housing fits, shoulder geometry, precision requirements and specified endplay or preload.Fit and temperature can change the mounted setting. There is no universal preload or tightening torque.
Alternative referenceOriginal brand, all suffixes, drawing, acceptance criteria and whether a full assembly is required.Envelope dimensions alone are insufficient for a verified cross-brand replacement.

Final installation settings should follow the equipment and bearing manufacturer’s instructions for the selected assembly. Confirm the required endplay or preload, fits and adjustment procedure before installation.

Technical & purchasing questions

Tapered Roller Bearing FAQ

What is a tapered roller bearing?

It is a rolling bearing with tapered rollers and conical raceways. A single row design supports combined radial and one-direction axial loading; its separable cup and cone assembly allow independent mounting.

What is the difference between metric and inch tapered roller bearings?

The nominal dimension systems and designation methods differ. Inch bearings commonly have separate cone and cup part numbers. Converting units does not establish interchangeability; use the complete reference and manufacturer’s drawing.

What is the difference between a cup and a cone?

The cup is the outer ring. A cone assembly contains the inner ring, rollers and cage. State whether your order needs both components or only one, and provide the full references.

Can tapered roller bearings support axial loads?

Yes. A single row bearing supports axial load in one direction. An opposed pair or an appropriate double row design can support axial loads in both directions; the complete shaft arrangement must be checked.

Do tapered roller bearings need preload?

Not in every application. The specified setting may be endplay or preload. Fits, thermal expansion and operating loads affect that setting. Follow the OEM procedure; excessive preload can cause overheating and reduce bearing life.

How do I identify the correct bearing size?

Read the markings on both rings and the package, then check d, D and assembled width T. Confirm B, C, suffixes and mounting details against the drawing. Send clear photos and measured dimensions if markings are unreadable.

Can one bearing brand replace another?

A complete bearing may be a candidate after dimensions, tolerances, contact geometry, ratings and application requirements are verified. Do not assume cups and cones from different brands or designs can be mixed without manufacturer confirmation.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the full bearing or cup/cone part numbers, brand preference, quantity, dimensions or drawings, application details, destination country and required delivery date. State whether you need a complete assembly or a separate component.

Can buyers request alternative bearing brands?

Yes. Include the specified brand and whether alternatives are acceptable. KROX can discuss the request; availability, technical equivalence and commercial terms must be confirmed for the actual model before an alternative is accepted.

How are tapered roller bearings packaged for export?

Packing is agreed for the product and shipment. Specify preservation, individual packing, component identification, labels and any carton, pallet or crate requirements with the RFQ. The final packing method and transport terms are confirmed during quotation.
