Construction & load support

Deep Groove Ball Bearing Overview

A conventional single row deep groove ball bearing has an inner ring, outer ring, balls and a cage. Deep raceway grooves guide the balls; the cage spaces them around the bearing.

Radial load and two-way axial support

The geometry allows a single row bearing to support radial loads and axial loads in both directions. The allowable combined load must still be checked for the selected size, internal design, clearance and operating conditions.

Low-friction designs can suit rotating equipment, but usable speed also depends on lubrication, closures, fits, load and heat dissipation. A family name alone does not establish a speed rating.

Match the complete bearing requirement

The same basic model may be offered with different closures, lubricant, clearance, cage or precision requirements. These details can matter even when d, D and B are identical.

Deep groove ball bearings are not self-aligning. Keep the shaft and housing geometry within the specified limits; do not infer permissible misalignment from appearance.

Protection is a design choice

Open vs Shielded vs Sealed Ball Bearings

Select the closure together with the lubrication system and contamination conditions. A dark seal or metal cover in a photograph does not establish the full sealing specification.

ConfigurationTypical distinctionBuyer checks
Open deep groove ball bearingsNo integral seals or shields; the equipment must provide the required lubrication and protection.Oil or grease supply, housing seals, contamination exposure and maintenance method.
Shielded ball bearings · Z / ZZ / 2ZMetal shields are normally non-contact. They offer protection with limited friction from the closure, but are not liquid-tight seals. One or both sides, lubricant specification and whether the shield design suits the environment.
Sealed ball bearings · RS / 2RS conventionsElastomer seal designs may be contact, light-contact or non-contact. Greater sealing contact generally introduces more friction.Actual seal construction and material, lubricant, speed and temperature limits. Short suffixes are not universal specifications.

Do not substitute closures by dimensions alone. An open bearing in an oil-lubricated arrangement cannot automatically be replaced by a sealed bearing. Confirm lubrication access, friction and operating temperature for the complete installation.

Compare the bearing envelope

Common Deep Groove Ball Bearing Series

The 6000, 6200 and 6300 families cover familiar metric bearing envelopes. Compare dimensions at the same bore, then check the exact product ratings and application.

SeriesEnvelope comparisonTypical selection context
6000 SeriesA relatively compact section. The 6005 reference below is 25 × 47 × 12 mm.Compact rotating assemblies and shaft supports where the calculated duty suits the selected design.
6200 SeriesA larger section than 6000 in the same-bore examples. 6205 is 25 × 52 × 15 mm.Electric motors, pumps, fans and general industrial transmission equipment.
6300 SeriesA larger envelope again in the same-bore examples. 6305 is 25 × 62 × 17 mm.Shaft supports where the available space and calculated loads justify the larger bearing.

These are selection contexts, not application approvals, load classifications or claims about KROX customers. A larger envelope does not remove the need to verify speed, load, fits and operating clearance.

Closure, clearance and lubricant requirements still need to be checked; ratings, speed limits, weights and tolerances are product-specific.

Read every part of the marking

Model Identification, Sealing Codes & C3 Clearance

Use the complete marking from the bearing and package. The following are common conventions; the selected product’s designation system and technical specification govern the order.

MarkingCommon meaningWhat to confirm
Basic model · 6205Identifies a bearing dimension family and bore code; it is not a complete performance specification.d, D, B and the full prefix/suffix sequence. Special bores and variants need their own drawing.
Z / ZZ / 2ZZ commonly indicates one metal shield; ZZ or 2Z commonly indicates shields on both sides.Actual shield arrangement, grease and the manufacturer’s complete code.
RS / 2RSCommonly used for sealing on one or both sides. Exact codes and construction vary across product ranges.Contact condition, seal material and operating limits. Do not translate every seal code directly into 2RS.
CN / NormalNormal radial internal clearance before mounting; the explicit marking may be omitted. The specified class and clearance after fitting and temperature effects.
C3Radial internal clearance greater than Normal before mounting.Required clearance for the fits, load and temperatures. C3 is neither a precision class nor a quality upgrade.
Other prefixes and suffixesMay identify cage, lubricant, precision, ring modifications or application-specific requirements.Retain the exact code and ask for its definition. Equal dimensions do not establish equivalence.

Read the bore code carefully

In many conventional metric references, 00, 01, 02 and 03 correspond to 10, 12, 15 and 17 mm bores. For many codes from 04 upward, multiply by five: 05 in 6205 indicates 25 mm. Miniature bearings and special bore references have exceptions.

Separate size, seal and clearance

A request such as 6205-2RS/C3 combines a basic model, a sealing request and a clearance class. It still needs confirmation of the actual seal design, lubricant and complete product specification; it is not an automatic cross-brand interchange approval.

Review the running condition

Lubrication, Fits & Operating Clearance

Confirm lubricant and replenishment

Ask whether the selected bearing is supplied with grease and whether replenishment is intended. Check grease suitability, fill, temperature, speed and compatibility with the equipment’s lubrication system.

Do not wash out factory grease, remove closures or add a different lubricant without an approved procedure. A shield or seal does not make every bearing suitable for water, chemicals or an unlimited service interval.

Unmounted clearance is not running clearance

Interference fits and temperature differences between the rings can reduce the available clearance. Use the specified shaft and housing fits and evaluate the mounted condition.

Do not select C3 simply because it is available, or apply a generic preload or tightening torque. Installation force should act through the ring being fitted, without being transmitted through the balls.

Application-led sourcing

Technical & purchasing questions

Deep Groove Ball Bearing FAQ

What is a deep groove ball bearing?

It is a rolling bearing with balls running in deep raceway grooves in the inner and outer rings. A conventional single row design supports radial load and axial loads in both directions, within the limits of the selected bearing and operating conditions.

What is the difference between open, shielded and sealed bearings?

Open bearings have no integral closures. Metal shields normally provide non-contact protection, while seal designs may be contact, light-contact or non-contact. Check contamination exposure, lubricant retention, friction and the permitted speed for the actual product.

Are ZZ and 2Z the same?

Both are commonly used to describe metal shields on both sides. This naming similarity does not prove that two products have identical shield geometry, lubricant, clearance or performance. Confirm the complete designation and specification when replacing a bearing.

Does 2RS always mean a contact seal?

2RS commonly indicates seals on both sides, but the exact code and sealing construction vary by manufacturer and product range. State whether contact or non-contact sealing is required, and confirm material and operating limits instead of relying on the short suffix alone.

What does C3 mean on a ball bearing?

C3 identifies radial internal clearance greater than Normal before mounting. It is not a quality grade, precision class or independent high-speed rating. Fits and temperatures can change the mounted clearance, so use the class specified for the application.

What are the dimensions of a 6205 bearing?

The nominal 6205 reference in this guide is 25 mm bore × 52 mm outside diameter × 15 mm width. Confirm the complete designation, closures, clearance, internal design and drawing before ordering; matching dimensions alone do not establish a suitable replacement.

Can deep groove ball bearings carry axial loads?

Yes, a conventional single row design can carry axial loads in both directions as well as radial loads. The permissible combination depends on the exact bearing, clearance, loading and operating conditions. Use a different bearing arrangement if the specified duty requires it.

Can I replace an open bearing with a sealed version?

Only after reviewing the lubrication system, closures, friction, heat generation, speed and installation. A sealed version may be unsuitable for an existing oil flow or replenishment arrangement. Equal boundary dimensions are only one part of the check.

Are sealed bearings maintenance-free?

Do not assume this for every product or installation. Some capped designs are supplied with grease intended for their specified service conditions. Confirm lubrication and maintenance instructions; seals do not remove the need to monitor the equipment or control contamination.

Can these bearings accommodate shaft misalignment?

Conventional deep groove ball bearings are not self-aligning bearings. Shaft and housing alignment still matters. Any permitted misalignment is product- and load-dependent; consult the exact bearing specification instead of applying a universal angle.

Can KROX discuss an alternative bearing brand or reference?

Send the original full marking, drawing and acceptance criteria, and state whether alternatives are permitted. Technical suitability and commercial availability are checked for the specific inquiry; the basic model number does not establish cross-brand equivalence.

What should I include in a quotation request?

Provide the full bearing model and suffixes, brand preference, quantity, open/shielded/sealed requirement, clearance if specified, dimensions or drawings, application and speed, destination country and required delivery date. Packaging, minimum order quantity and lead time are confirmed for the actual request.
